During the week of June 29-July 5, Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

During the week of June 29-July 5, Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

Ten of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 11; South Kohala, four; South Hilo, three; Puna, two; and Ka‘u, one.

So far this year, there have been 513 DUI arrests compared to 636 during the same period last year, a decrease of 19.3 percent.

There have been 759 major accidents so far this year compared to 810 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.3 percent.

So far this year, there have been 13 official traffic fatalities compared to seven during the same period last year, representing an increase of 85.7 percent.

To date, seven of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — four to drugs and three to a combination of drugs and alcohol.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
